Shifting the Circle: How We Rewrite Culture Through Connection

Human beings are natural adapters. We mirror the worlds we’re born into. If a family normalizes body-shaming, gossip, or silence around abuse, we inherit those patterns as truth. Without realizing it, we start to shrink ourselves. We hush our stories. We repeat the cycle.

But cycles only end when someone chooses not to keep them alive.

Shifting society doesn’t just happen through headlines or policy—it starts closer to home. It’s the ripple of everyday courage: in our living rooms, at family dinners, in our friendships. It looks like refusing to let “What was she wearing?” pass as casual conversation. It looks like calling out fat-shaming jokes. It looks like refusing to gossip about another woman’s body or choices. It looks like saying out loud what others want silenced—even if it makes “Uncle Joe” uncomfortable.

And it also looks like intentionally stepping into communities that model something new. Human beings don’t just adapt to toxic cultures—we also adapt to empowering ones. That’s why joining body-positive dance studios can remind us how joyful movement feels in a room full of women celebrating their strength instead of comparing their shapes. It’s why attending the Wild Roses Festival matters—because watching women gather in unapologetic expression shifts how we believe women can behave in the world. And it’s why ceremonies like the ones I host during the full moon are powerful: they’re spaces where women share stories, release shame, and remember what it feels like to be deeply seen and held.

I know this shift isn’t easy. I’ve lived it. I’ve lost friendships. I’ve been met with backlash from family. Speaking truth can carry a heavy price.

But what I’ve gained has been far greater:

  • Family members who approach others with more kindness.

  • Real friendships rooted in support instead of comparison.

  • A partner who meets me with respect and tenderness.

  • A spirit that feels free, aligned, and unapologetic.

The people we surround ourselves with shape us. That’s the truth. But the beauty is—we get to choose who stays in our circle.

When we choose courage over comfort, alignment over approval, and surround ourselves with women who are actively rewriting the story, we don’t just change our personal lives. We change the culture itself. We become the living proof that another way is possible.
