What Should I Wear To My Boudoir Session?

Somewhere between booking their session and walking through my studio doors, most women become convinced that finding the perfect outfit is the hardest part of the entire experience.

I can't tell you how many consultations I've had where a woman is far less worried about being photographed than she is about what she's going to wear.

It's one of the first questions that comes up during a consultation, and understandably so. Most women have never done a boudoir shoot before, so suddenly they're staring into their closet wondering if they need to buy a bunch of expensive lingerie and somehow magically become a Victoria's Secret model overnight.

The good news?

You absolutely do not.

After photographing nearly 2,000 women over the last 15 years, I've learned that the most beautiful photos aren't about the outfit. They're about how the woman wearing it feels. Confidence, playfulness, sensuality, power, softness, femininity, creativity... those are the things that create memorable photographs.

The outfit is simply a tool we use to help tell your story.

One of my favourite recommendations for clients is a good high-waisted lingerie set. High-waisted bottoms tend to be flattering on almost everybody because they help create more of an hourglass shape while offering a little support through the lower tummy. They highlight curves beautifully and photograph incredibly well from almost every angle.

Another studio favourite is a bodysuit. Bodysuits tend to move with you as you flow through your session, which is important because boudoir isn't about standing stiffly in one pose. You're moving, stretching, arching, laughing, rolling around on beds, dancing in the rain room, and creating art. A bodysuit stays in place while still hugging your shape in all the right ways.

Of course, lingerie isn't your only option.

Some of my favourite images have involved nothing more than a sheet and beautiful light.

I absolutely love working with draping fabric and satin sheets because they fit every body. They can reveal what you want to show, conceal what you'd rather keep hidden, and create a soft, artistic feel that is both sensual and timeless. Fabric gives us endless creative possibilities while allowing you to control exactly how much skin you want to show.

For clients looking for something a little more dramatic, I also have custom crystal dresses available in the studio. These pieces were designed specifically for my clients and photograph like absolute magic. The way they catch the light creates an ethereal, goddess-like feel that makes women feel powerful the moment they put them on.

And sometimes clothing isn't even the star of the show.

I've used books, flowers, records, cowboy hats, jewelry, body chains, Snakes, and all sorts of unexpected props to create stunning images. Sometimes the most interesting photographs happen when we stop focusing on the outfit and start focusing on the story we're trying to tell.

What matters most is that you feel like yourself. Whether that means slipping into a crystal dress, wrapping up in a cozy sweater, twirling around in a flowing gown, or embracing the simplicity of a sheet and beautiful light, I'll help create images that feel authentic to you and tell your story.

Now let's talk about a few things I generally don't love.

The first is baby dolls.

I know they're a popular lingerie choice, and if you absolutely love yours, we'll make it work. But generally speaking, baby dolls tend to hide all the beautiful shape through your waist, hips, and booty. They often add volume where we don't necessarily want it and can make you appear larger than you actually are in photographs.

The second is sports jerseys.

Listen, I fully support your dedication to your man's favourite team.

But in my professional opinion, sports jerseys usually look better on the floor.

They tend to hide your shape, add bulk, and don't create the same visual impact as other wardrobe choices. If you really want to incorporate one, we'll find a creative way to do it, but I usually encourage clients to think beyond the jersey.

The best wardrobe is the one that helps you feel like yourself.

Some women want soft and romantic. Some want dark and moody. Some want full goddess energy. Some want cowgirl vibes. Some want to channel their inner rockstar. There is no right answer.

That's why every Pink Blush experience includes a consultation where we'll discuss your vision, review outfit ideas, and make a plan together. You'll also have access to my client closet, which includes pieces ranging from XS to 4XL, custom crystal dresses, body jewelry, robes, shoes, accessories, and more.

If there's one thing I want you to take away from this article, it's this:

Your outfit is not what makes the photograph beautiful.

You are.

The lingerie, the fabric, the flowers, the crystals, the sheets, and the props are simply tools that help tell your story.

Some of the most powerful photographs I've ever created involved nothing more than beautiful light, a sheet, and a woman deciding she was worthy of being seen.

Don't underestimate the magic of simplicity.
